Dr. Yusef Salaam Announced as Keynote Speaker for WMBK's 4th Annual Gala
This year's Keepers & Kicks theme calls guests to suit up, step into action and help build a stronger future for the next generation
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Washtenaw My Brother's Keeper will welcome Dr. Yusef Salaam, member of the Exonerated Five, author, advocate and New York City Council Member, as keynote speaker for its 4th Annual Gala on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center Ballroom.
Salaam's extraordinary journey from wrongful conviction to exoneration, advocacy and public leadership has made him one of the nation's most powerful voices for justice, resilience and change. His story embodies the courage, purpose and impact at the heart of this year's gala.
This year's gala theme, Keepers & Kicks, brings an upscale suits-and-sneakers feel to an evening centered on fellowship, leadership, service and community impact.
Suit Up. Step Into Action. is more than a slogan and more than a dress code. It is a call to purpose.
Keepers & Kicks will bring the community together to celebrate individuals who exemplify leadership, service and impact while inspiring others to turn intention into meaningful action that uplifts young people and strengthens the community.
“I’m looking forward to our annual gala coming up, it’s always exciting coming up with new themes each year while maintaining the signature feel of the event. Keepers & Kicks is a new spin on our tradition of celebrating our accomplishments and community, while also stepping into action for the new year,” said Jamall Bufford, WMBK Executive Director.
The vision for the evening extends beyond the ballroom. By honoring people who are already making a difference, WMBK hopes to inspire guests to consider how their own voices, resources, relationships and influence can create opportunity and help build a stronger future for the next generation.
The gala will also honor the legacy of Professor Ronald C. Woods, an attorney, educator and civil rights advocate whose career at Eastern Michigan University spanned 43 years.
His legacy continues through the Ronald C. Woods Equity Justice-Warrior Award, recognizing leaders whose service, advocacy and commitment create meaningful change in the lives of others.
The evening will feature a VIP reception, dinner, live entertainment by Formula 734, community recognition and opportunities for guests to directly support WMBK's work.
Guests are encouraged to dress to impress, step out in their best sneakers and leave ready to turn purpose into movement.
