WMBK Introduces the Keepers & Kicks Experience at Its 4th Annual Gala

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Washtenaw My Brother’s Keeper will host its 4th Annual Gala on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center Ballroom.

This year, WMBK will introduce Keepers & Kicks, a new suits-and-sneakers experience that blends celebration, personal style and community action.

The gala will bring together community members, educators, advocates, elected officials and business leaders in support of boys and young men of color throughout Washtenaw County. Guests are invited to dress to impress, step out in their best sneakers and commit to meaningful action beyond the ballroom.

“I’m looking forward to our annual gala coming up, it’s always exciting coming up with new themes each year while maintaining the signature feel of the event. Keepers & Kicks is a new spin on our tradition of celebrating our accomplishments and community, while also stepping into action for the new year”, said Jamall Bufford, WMBK Executive Director.

The evening will honor the legacy of Professor Ronald C. Woods, an attorney, educator and civil rights advocate whose career at Eastern Michigan University spanned 43 years. Woods served as the university’s first head of African American Studies and as director of the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Communities.

His legacy continues through the Ronald C. Woods Equity Justice-Warrior Award, which recognizes leaders who create opportunities, challenge barriers and demonstrate a sustained commitment to service and advocacy.

WMBK will also welcome a nationally recognized keynote speaker whose powerful story of resilience, justice and leadership has inspired audiences across the country. The official announcement is coming soon.

The evening will include a VIP reception, dinner, live entertainment by Formula 734, community recognition and opportunities for guests to support WMBK’s mission and step into action.

Attendees are encouraged to pair upscale attire with statement sneakers that reflect their individual style.

Additional announcements regarding the keynote speaker, honorees, sponsorship opportunities and full event program will be released soon.
